Construction Initiative

Making Connections in the Construction Industry

Since 2018 we have been working in partnership with local companies building new structures for students and residents in the Capital Region of New York.  The Construction Initiative is dedicated to educating the community about career and business opportunities on local construction projects, with a specific focus on connecting residents to employment opportunities and small construction companies with subcontracting opportunities.

From 2018 – 2020 we worked alongside the City School District of Albany (CSDA) in Albany, NY to assist with the development of the Minority-Women Owned Business Enterprise (M/WBE)-Workforce Development program.

To date we are working alongside The Community Builders (TCB) to connect residents and M/WBE’s to employment and business opportunities on the Hillside Crossings development located in the Hamilton Hill neighborhood in Schenectady, NY.

Focus Areas

Business Development

We work with small construction companies that are led by women or people of color to assist general contractors and property maagement construction sites with increasing the number of  M/WBE subcontractors woking their sites and to help business owners learn about the certification process, provide information about subcontracting opportunities and connect company representatives with certification specialists who help with the completion of the M/WBE certification.

Click here to see qualifications for the M/WBE certification on the NYS Empire State Development website.

Workforce Development

We educate members of the community about career opportunities within the construction industry, about union apprenticeship and pre-apprenticeship programs and the enrollment and direct hire processes and serve as a liaison between trade unions and career candidates. As the liaison we communicate with union representatives to recommend career candidates then follow-up until individuals secure employment on a construction site.

Community Engagement

We welcome invitations by community-based organization representatives to educate your clients, students or members through a 30-45 minutes presentation and Q&A. We will educate individuals about how we can help them connect to career opportunities at the Hillside Crossings development or other opportunities through unions, from apprenticeship programs to direct hire options.

Contact us today at 518-207-0209 to schedule a presentation.

Career Fairs

Multiple times per year we coordinate a construction industry information session and career fair. During this event individuals learn more about the process of securing employment in the construction industry, the benefits and make connections with union representatives.

Networking Mixers

The networking mixers are designed to connect tradesmen/women and union represnetatives. This is a more relaxed environment that allows the career candidates and union represetatives to foster a relationship.

Community Updates

We host community updates to inform members of the community about the progress of the construction projects and development we working with. We welcome all members of the community to attend these events to stay abreast to the buuilding phases.
